Setting Up the eOne to be Used on College Networks
While the eOne is fairly simple to set up for home use, connecting
the eOne to the school's network requires a little bit more work.
Hopefully this How To will help you get setup on the school's LAN. This
is specific for UNC-CH, but the instructions should be similar to other
schools.
1. The very first thing that you want to do is to enable the Onboard
LAN. First plug in the Ethernet cable into the computer and the Ethernet
jack in your room. Next, boot your computer up as usual and when you see
the eMachines startup screen come on press the "Del" key on
the keyboard (You don't need to hold the shift). This will take you to
the Setup screen, now go to the Advanced menu and select 'IO Device
configuration'. You should see the Onboard LAN and press enter, now
select enabled and press enter. Finally, exit and save changes (press
Yes when they ask: "Are you sure?"). The computer will now
restart.
*The computer will take longer to boot with the Onboard LAN
enabled.
**From this point on the Instructions are UNC-CH specific, but can be
applied in various other schools.
2. When your system is up in Windows, click on Start, Settings,
Control Panel and double click the Network icon.
3. Highlight 'TGHN-Intel HPNAM', this is the Ethernet card. Click on
Add, then click on Protocol. Click on the Add button once more. Now
there should be a window with Manufacturers listed on the left and
Network Protocols on the right. For manufacturers click on Microsoft and
for Network Protocols click on TCP/IP, select OK.
4. Now its time to configure the TCP/IP. You should see TCP/IP in the
window now, since we added it in the last step. Double click on TCP/IP.
Now under IP addresses the option that should be selected is
"Obtain IP address automatically." Under the WINS
Configuration tab, the option that should be selected is "Disable
WINS resolution." And under the DNS Configuration tab, make
sure that the "Enable DNS" is selected. Your user ID goes into
the HOST field and unc.edu (or whatever your schools address would be)
goes into the DOMAIN field. Click OK. Again make sure that the Ethernet
cable is in and you must now restart the computer.
5. When rebooted, click on Start, then Run, and type in winipcfg. A
window should show up and in this window make sure that the Intel
DC21145 Fast Ethernet is selected. Now copy down the adapter address.
Now you may click OK and shut down your computer.
6. Find a computer that has a working internet connection (it can be
an existing one on your eOne or your roommate's computer). Now go to the
following website, help.unc.edu/resnet/connected.html. Click on Register
your computer for ResNet service and follow the on screen directions to
register your computer.
*If you don't attend UNC, you will need to find out your specific
address for your specific college
7. Enjoy surfing the web on your eOne at very high speeds.
